That depends on the flavor you seek.
Species of wood used to smoke with are fruit woods (cherry, apple, pear, etc), pecan, maple and oak, just to name of few.
There are a number of fire pits on the market that will accommodate a 16" piece of wood. However, there are smaller smokeless fire pits that require a 12" or less piece of wood. JC Farms-Firewood has seasoned firewood that will fit any size of smokeless fire pit that you might purchase.
